Nanoka-machi Kominka
Sanyo-onoda City, Yamaguchi Pref.
This kominka is located in Sanyo-Onoda City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, on the Seto Inland Sea side of western Japan. It features distinctive red and durable Sekishu tiles, with a chimney rising from the roof and stacked brick walls that create a warm, inviting character. Rare for a traditional house, the chimney serves a wood-burning stove that heats a high-ceilinged living room with exposed old beams. The interior has been thoroughly renovated in recent years, offering comfortable country living suited to a modern lifestyle. The narrow lane in front of the house is part of the ancient Sanyo Road, once a major route linking Kyushu with Kyoto and Nara. The area known as Nanoka-machi has long been a historic trading hub, and while now peaceful, it offers good everyday convenience, with Asa Shinkansen Station and schools within walking distance.
