Kasebara Machiya
Kameoka City, Kyoto Pref.
White plaster walls, a mushiko-mado (insect cage window) adorned with kote-e (plaster relief art), and elegant senbon-gōshi (thousand-grid lattice) — this splendid machiya, reminiscent of those found in central Kyoto, is actually located in the city of Kameoka, just west of Kyoto. Nestled in a mountainous basin, Kameoka has long flourished thanks to its fertile lands and strategic position on the route connecting Kyoto to the Sanin region. This machiya, facing the old Sanin Kaidō road, is a testament to that prosperity. Inside, many traditional fittings remain in good condition, including a well. Unlike the typically narrow machiya, this property boasts a spacious plot with ample room for a car and frontage on three streets — a noteworthy advantage. Conveniently located near Kameoka Station, the city's main hub, daily life is easy and accessible. It’s also just over 30 minutes by train to JR Kyoto Station.
