Ashikawa-hama Kominka
Asahi City, Chiba Pref.
The long, arching sandy beach of Kujukurihama is one of Japan's most famous coastal views. It is also known as a mecca for fishing, swimming, and surfing for people in the Tokyo metropolitan area. This Kominka, with its Kabuki-mon gate and stone walls made of fine stone, is located on the northeast bank of the beach. The main house has an appearance from before the 19th century with a large roof that is characteristic of this area. It is rare that the earthen entrance with a Shinto altar and a Buddhist altar, which appear to be made of fine wood, and a huge Daikoku Bashira (main pillar) remains. There is a bathing beach a few minutes' walk away, and by car it is only an hour and a half to central Tokyo and about 50 minutes to Narita International Airport.
